In a time when wenches wore corsets, gentlemen wore top hats and mobile phones were steam-powered, the Freak Show was a refined form of entertainment – a circus of horrors. With over 35 artists & performers, Amsterdam Spook‘s ’11 Halloween paid homage to the exhibition of human oddities and to steampunk.
Formerly at Boom Chicago, Amsterdam Spook’s 2011 bash was held this year at the historic Odeon Theater. Guests of the sold-out costume bash were treated to 3 & a half floors of Halloween, and each space had it’s own music style & theme.
Freak Show line-up
The circus of horrors took place all night over two stages and saw nails through noses, walking on broken glass, drag show operetta, body contortions and some seriously bizarre indie theatre. Artists included London burlesque goddesses, Berlin-based freak show artists, theatre troupes from the Netherlands, and the blind-folding duo known best as the ‘sugar sluts’.
* Most Original costume prize (cold hard cash) was the Steampunk bird-lady, runner-up (gift certificate Toni & Guy) was Eyeball Man.
* Best Themed prize (cold hard cash) went to the Siamese Twins, runner-up (Toni & Guy goodie bags) was the Saloon Keepers
* Best Group / Duo prize (cold hard cash) went to the Alice in Wonderland crew, runner-up (bottle of tequila care of Los Pilones) was Puppet Master and puppet.
Halloween Freak Show costume party was part of Amsterdam Spook’s 2nd annual Amsterdam Halloween Festival.
